Cornelia Bayley and Plas Teg
I drew Cornelia Bayley, the owner of Plas Teg — a 17th-century Jacobean mansion in Flintshire, Wales. A 10 bedroom Italian inspired home with British architecture. Cornelia is sitting around a table holding her bag. She’s surrounded by garden plants, flowers on a summer’s day.
Cornelia bought the house in 1986 when it was falling apart and spent nearly 30 years restoring it on her own. She lived there with her 12 cats, couple of parrots in the kitchen, often without heating or hot water, surviving on her state pension and small £7 tours she gave to visitors interested in the house’s ghosts and history. She would sleep on her sofa in the only room that had heating as it was far too expensive to heat the mansion.
She tended the gardens herself — 2.5 acres of grass — spending up to four hours a day pulling weeds by hand. Gardening, she said, helped her escape and gave her peace.
Cornelia once shared that she moved to Plas Teg after losing many close friends to AIDs, including her dearest friend George, and after the love of her life (Christopher left her). The house became her purpose and her comfort and she, intriguing and part of her charm.
Cordelia's photo stood out of beautiful young Cornelia sitting quietly, with a flowing frilly white dress with a midriff showing relaxed and smiling.
This high-resolution gallery print preserves every detail of the original drawing, offering a timeless and elegant piece suitable for any contemporary or classic interior. Each print is individually numbered as part of a strictly limited edition of 250.
